ORIGIN: The idea was taken from a Rogers and Hammerstein musical called "Carousel" that Ms. Francis used to watch with her Dad when she was a child.
FIRST USED: In the Daedream Production, "A Year in the Life," in 2015, in a segment called, "June," based on the Broadway musical mentioned above. QUOTES about "The Swing Phenomenon": "It was fun, I liked it. When I did the swing for the first time, I was kind of scared, because I saw Mariah do it, I was scared she was going to hit the floor, but then she didn't. When I did it, I feel like I was flying. It's really cool and I was really excited to get to do this." ~Layla, 4th grader "It's not as hard as it looks. It's all about trusting your partner and arm strength." ~Marlon, age 24 "The most important thing about the swing is trust between yourself and your partner. You have to trust yourself to have good footwork but you also have to trust your partner to fall through to propel the swing, because if they are nervous about going toward the ground, it won't work.' ~Ron, age 21 "It feels nice, but it's very scary at first. You never know." ~Mariah, 8th Grader

Come support us in February!
Help us get there..... Make a donation! Sometimes throughout the program, we have what we call "Surprise Dances," and the mentors and some of the cast members sign up. During the Surprise Dances, nothing is known to the volunteers. They do not know the genre, the music or the tempo of the pieces. AT ALL. They choose a number, and then that corresponding track is played. They must improvise the whole thing. On the spot. Right. Then. We are sure you join us in being amazed. These performances look almost REHEARSED and they are not! Watch some tidbits below. Included are Marlon (10 years), Ron (5 years), Torey (8 years), Aicha (4 years), Deandre (11 years) and Kevin (7 years). Aicha has had 3 years of formal training. The rest - none. VIDEOS BELOW! Thanks to Marcella Monk Flake, a long-time colleague and friend of our Executive Director, Ms. Francis, select members of Daedream were able to perform this evening at Woolsey Hall, and what an honor it was. In attendance were Directors Kevin, Torey, Deandre and Ronald, mentors Marlon, JeVaughn, Tiyana and Frenchie, Junior Mentor Candidates Nelly, Savanna, Jay, Kayla, Taryn and Aissatou, and 7th grade lead singer, Julieanne. What an amazing job. After the piece was over, Thelonious Monk called them back and they got a standing ovation from the audience. I had to cut the post in parts. The video was too large. Watch below (choreography Kevin Kelly, Deandre Ward and Torey Robinson)
Season 30 started off with a DANCE!!! On Wednesday, September 20, 2017, we welcomed our NEW MEMBERS with a classic Roman Colosseum entrance, where each person's name was a called and they walked through a cheering crowd!!! Following this, our previous cast members, and a few very VERY EAGER NEWBIES, provided a small glimpse at what team dance looks like. The faces and energy surely said enough about how excited we are for this season! Some of our BRAND NEW TALENT just got up and joined it, before we called EVERYONE to get up and have fun trying the "Daedream DQ STEP," a combination step similar to a line dance, created by Daedream's own choreographers. You'll see it pop up here and there! But for now, take a peek at last week's big opening day! Spot your fave cast members!!! More to come, it's only SEPTEMBER!
Each day after camp, the mentor and choreography teams meet to work on next year's show (2018, "Fear Itself.") These three hour sessions are on a voluntary basis and include:
July 8, 2017 - Feliciano's Music Academy, Grand Opening, State Street Video clip courtesy of Danyelle Rogers, Part 2 of their presentation. Full video coming soon!
